About
The Samoyed is a striking and spirited medium‑large working breed celebrated for its thick, weather‑resistant white or cream double coat and its perpetually cheerful “Sammy smile,” originally developed to help the nomadic Samoyede people in the harsh Arctic — herding reindeer, pulling sleds, and keeping families warm in frigid climates.
Samoyeds typically stand about 19–23 inches tall and weigh between 35–65 pounds, with a fluffy, dense coat that provides insulation and protection in cold weather. Their expressive, upturned mouth corners — the famous “smile” — help prevent drool from freezing in icy conditions.
Known for being intelligent, sociable, and loyal, Samoyeds make devoted family companions but also retain their working heritage: they’re energetic, alert, and eager to participate in activities with their people.
Grooming
Samoyeds have a profuse double coat that requires frequent care. Their soft, thick undercoat and longer outer coat shed year‑round, with twice‑yearly heavy “blow,” so daily brushing is ideal to remove loose hairs and prevent mats.
Regular grooming should include nail trims, ear cleaning, and dental care. Bathing is needed only when dirty, but professional grooming every several weeks can help manage their abundant fur. Because their coat sheds heavily, be prepared for hair on clothes and furniture.
Nutrition
Samoyeds thrive on a high‑quality, balanced diet tailored to medium‑large active breeds. Because they are energetic and can be prone to weight gain if overfed, monitoring portion sizes and controlling treats is important.
Fresh water should always be available, and regular veterinary check‑ups help ensure proper nutrition throughout life stages. Some Samoyeds may benefit from diets that support joint health due to their active lifestyle.
Exercise
Samoyeds are energetic and lively and need daily physical and mental activity to stay happy and well‑behaved. Long walks, hikes, runs, playtime, and canine sports like agility or obedience help satisfy both body and mind.
They are happiest when included in family activities and thrive with at least 30–60 minutes (or more) of daily exercise, though many owners find that Sammies do best with closer to 1–2 hours of activity to burn off energy.
Is a Samoyed Right for You?
The Samoyed is a friendly, intelligent, and affectionate breed that bonds closely with its family and enjoys social interaction and shared activities. Their working heritage makes them ideal for active owners who can meet their exercise, grooming, and attention needs.
However, this breed isn’t low‑maintenance: their dense coat demands regular brushing, and their high energy means they do best with ample exercise. They also thrive on companionship and can become bored or vocal if left alone too long. If you’re ready for a beautiful, spirited dog with a joyful personality and ample grooming and activity time, a Samoyed may be a wonderful match.
