Portuguese Water Dog

About

The Portuguese Water Dog is an athletic, spirited, and intelligent medium‑sized breed known for its remarkable swimming ability and rich maritime history. Originally developed along the coast of Portugal, these dogs were indispensable partners to fishermen — herding fish into nets, retrieving gear from the water, and even acting as couriers between boats, thanks to their webbed feet and waterproof coat.

Portuguese Water Dogs typically stand about 17–23 inches tall and weigh 35–60 pounds, with a robust, muscular build that reflects their working heritage. Their thick, curly or wavy coat sheds minimally and is often considered a good option for allergy‑sensitive homes when cared for correctly.

These dogs are energetic, social, and eager to please — a combination that makes them both loyal companions and enthusiastic participants in dog sports and family activities.

Grooming

Portuguese Water Dogs have a dense, curly or wavy coat that requires regular grooming to prevent tangles and mats. Their hair grows continuously — more like human hair than typical dog fur — and will need routine brushing several times a week.

Many owners choose professional grooming every 4–8 weeks to keep the coat manageable and trimmed in a style of their choice, whether a classic “lion clip” or a shorter retriever clip. Nails should be trimmed regularly, ears cleaned to prevent buildup, and dental care maintained for overall health.

Nutrition

A high‑quality, balanced diet tailored to a medium, active dog helps Portuguese Water Dogs maintain lean muscle, stamina, and overall wellness. Because they’re energetic and can develop weight issues if overfed, it’s important to control portions and measure meals.

Fresh water should always be available, especially after exercise or swimming, and treats should be given in moderation. Consulting your veterinarian can help fine‑tune feeding amounts and schedules throughout your dog’s life stages.

Exercise

Portuguese Water Dogs are energetic and athletic — they thrive on daily activity and mental engagement. A mix of brisk walks, swimming, fetch, and interactive games keeps them happy, healthy, and out of mischief.

Because of their working background, they also excel in dog sports such as agility, obedience, rally, and water work. Owners should plan for at least 30–60 minutes of exercise each day to match their high energy levels and keep them well‑balanced companions.

Is a Portuguese Water Dog Right for You?

Portuguese Water Dogs are loyal, intelligent, and highly social — making them wonderful companions for active families or individuals who enjoy outdoor adventures and mental challenges. These dogs form strong bonds with their people and are happiest when included in daily activities.

However, their energy, exercise needs, and grooming requirements mean they aren’t ideal for someone seeking a low‑maintenance dog. They do best with owners who can offer consistent training, attentive care, and plenty of engagement. If you’re ready to meet their physical and social needs, a Portuguese Water Dog can be a devoted and dynamic addition to your home.
