Keeshond

About

The Keeshond is a cheerful, outgoing Spitz‑type dog known for its plush double coat, distinctive “spectacles” around the eyes, and friendly, affectionate personality. Originally a companion and watchdog on the barges that traveled the canals of the Netherlands, this medium‑sized breed has charmed families for centuries with its alert yet gentle nature.

Keeshonden typically stand about 17–18 inches tall and weigh between 35–45 pounds, with a thick gray, black, and cream double coat that gives them a regal, lion‑like ruff and a plumed tail that curls over the back. Their foxy face and expressive markings — the so‑called “spectacles” — give them an intelligent, endearing look that matches their lively spirit.

Keeshonden are known for being bright, adaptable, and devoted companions. Bred to live in close quarters with humans, they form strong bonds with their families and thrive on interaction, playfulness, and mental engagement.

Grooming

Although their abundant double coat looks luxurious, Keeshonden are moderately manageable with regular care. Their dense undercoat and longer outer fur require weekly brushing — more often during seasonal shedding periods — to prevent mats and remove loose hair.

Its coat naturally resists “doggy” odors, but occasional bathing helps keep the fur clean, especially around feet and feathered areas. Routine maintenance should also include nail trimming, ear checks, and dental care to support overall health.

Nutrition

A balanced, high‑quality diet suitable for a medium‑sized, active companion helps keep a Keeshond healthy and at an ideal weight. Because this breed can be prone to weight gain if overfed, controlling portions and choosing nutrient‑rich food is important. Fresh water should always be available, and treats should be given in moderation.

Consulting with a veterinarian on feeding amounts and adjustments as your Keeshond ages ensures they receive the right nutrition through puppyhood, adulthood, and senior years.

Exercise

Keeshonden have moderate energy levels and enjoy daily physical and mental activity. Around 30–60 minutes of exercise — like brisk walks, play sessions, or agility games — helps keep them fit and stimulated.

These dogs are versatile: they adapt well to apartment living if they get daily outings, and they also thrive with participation in obedience, rally, or agility activities that engage their intelligence and eagerness to learn.

Is a Keeshond Right for You?

The Keeshond is a loyal, affectionate family companion with a friendly, intelligent disposition. They are happiest when included in family life and thrive on attention, play, and mental engagement. Their moderate exercise needs and adaptable nature make them suitable for many living situations, from apartments to houses with yards.

However, their thick coat requires consistent grooming, and their social nature means they don’t like being left alone for long periods. If you’re looking for a medium‑sized dog with a rich history, unique looks, and a playful, people‑oriented personality, the Keeshond could be a perfect match.
